Inner Space

It’s clear that Hunter has been practicing his craft for some time (since at least 1969, he says), for the resolution between design and technique is about as close to perfect as you can get.  While the technique might be difficult, Hunter does not push it to the foreground.  Instead, he gives priority to the complex visual play of mass and void, and to the sheer beauty of figured wood.  The profile, which is probably rooted in Chinese ceramics, is simple and elegant.

But you can also “see through” the object, to the years of practice, experimentation, and failure that Hunter endured before he could arrive at this point.  And all that practice is meaningful: how many people today are capable of such sustained discipline?  Not too many, I would venture.  The object is testimony to a man’s good character.”
