Glimmer in Cross Currents

For me, the allure of exotic timbers from around the world has always been powerful.  In their turning and sculpting process I must slow down to really see and listen, both scientifically and spiritually to learn what is inherent, what is suggested and what is possible.  I embrace a multiplicity of influences, personal, cultural and natural, in this intimate process.  I use a fusion of techniques to explore the illusion of motion, add gesture or refine line while creating new life in the pieces.  I blend reality and illusion in the metaphoric vessel by changing the perceived speed or energy of the piece through sculpting of its forces and rhythms.  This piece is about more than the actual experience of channel currents and open sea; it is a metaphor for my own inner ebb and flow, of how in life we’re often at cross purposes with ourselves or others.
